We’re giving the award for “most talked about beauty trend for Fall 2012 NY Fashion Week” to the “bird’s nest ‘do.” Lead hairstylists at Chadwick Bell, Rag & Bone, Cynthia Rowley (pictured), and Creatures of the Wind all decided upon some iteration of this wild style. We know, we know… This hair look is rather, um, dramatic. But for everyday/real woman purposes, the point is to experiment by taking your hair texture to an unexpected place with styling tools. Ready to give it a whirl? Remember that texture is key. So play with your curling iron, three prong iron, straightener, and even blow the dust off of the crimper in order to achieve this fall hair trend effect.
Duffy, who created the hair look at Cynthia Rowley, used three different textures in the hair. Here’s how to get the runway version:
Step 1: Apply mousse generously throughout strands, blow drying afterwards to set.
Step 2: Take sections of hair and wrap them around a U-pin in a figure 8 (around one prong then the other). Create a figure-eight motion around the crown of the head, securing the hair into place with bobby pins. (Confused yet? Here’s a photo of the process.)
Step 3: Infuse the “pin curls” with heat to lock in the shape with a flat iron (Duffy used the Amika x Cynthia Rowley Styler).
Step 4: Next, create ultra-tight curls with a hot rod around the crown of the head.
Step 5: Remove the bobby pins and brush out the hair to create tremendous volume.
Step 6: Pull back and randomly pin a few pieces of hair to the head.
